LONGFORD SCHOOL HISTORY.
SCHOOLING
Boarding School
There used to be a school in Longford as long ago as 1791 – a boarding school.
An advertisement in the Derby Mercury dated 1st January 1791 announced that Mrs. Wilkins intends on Monday the 26th of January next, to open a school for the reception of young ladies at Ardsley near Longford.
We do not know how long the school prospered but there are no records of any further notices
The Church of England School
was originally built by the Coke family in 1875.
Lady Coke’s School Charity
Dame Katherine Coke by her will 1st December 1688 gave lands on trust for keeping poor children of the parish of Longford to school to learn to read or work. The education charity set up by Dame Katherine Coke also gives grants to young people to help in their careers on leaving school.
All the rents were received by Mr. Coke of Longford Hall who paid £16 a year to a schoolmaster for teaching 20 poor children to read, and also £4 a year to a schoolmistress of Rodsley for teaching poor children of that parish to read
