INTRODUCING LONGFORD
Longford is in the County of Derbyshire in the United Kingdom and lies at the centre of a triangle joining the towns of Ashbourne, Derby and Uttoxeter. It is situated on an old Roman road, Long Lane, which joins the historic Roman camps of Little Chester, Derby and Rocester over the border in Staffordshire.
The centre of the village is at SK214 374
Longford Parish comprises approx 135 households with 270 people appearing on the electoral role. We have 25 miles of footpaths which are audited and maintained by volunteers. We also have a small group of volunteers who maintain the churchyard and generally try to keep the village in a neat and tidy state.
Longford has managed to retain it’s original appearance with very little new housing development. It truly is still an unspoilt village.
Farming is still the most important local industry with still many traditional small farms.
Longford still retains many families who have lived here for generations plus incomers from the surrounding area who together have created a good mix and given Longford a really good mix of social activities. Events which are on-going throughout the year are a walking group, Pumpkin growing competition, an annual garden fete also an annual “Mumming” pageant ( in the local Hostelries) at Christmas.
It was clear from a recent Parish Appraisal (June 2003) that resident’s value highly the unique, open and largely unspoilt character of the parish - - - indeed in 2002, Longford won the Derbyshire Rural Community Council Award for the “Best Small Derbyshire Village of the Year”.
Longford residents are justly proud of their attractive village and through the Parish Council frequently make representations to the District Council’s planning committee to ensure it’s unique rural features and listed buildings are preserved
There is an active Parish Council of seven enthusiastic residents who have the village interests very much at heart and frequently take initiatives to preserve the historic and unique features and quality of life in the village. The P.C. meets ten times each year in the “Pump House” room on the corner of Longlane and Main Street. The village does not have a village hall.
